Central Organization of
Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has dismissed reports that
indicated he has decided to retire from the position.
Blogger Dennis Itumbi had
claimed that Atwoli has taken a back seat in COTU and is trying to impose a
successor of his choice.
He added that the labour movement
is against Atwoli’s decision and that the Secretary General has called an emergency
meeting to be held today, Wednesday, August 17.
In a response to the tweet, the
COTU boss termed Itumbi’s message as a pure lie saying; “Matters COTU (K)
leadership is a COTU (K) constitutional issue and not an Atwoli issue. As of
now, I am in office serving my last term.”
He further added that the
purported meeting is meant to make burial plans for Banking, Insurance and
Finance Union (BIFU) General Secretary Isiah Kubai.
“We have called for a
meeting to conduct a fundraiser in preparation for the burial on Friday in
Meru,” he said.
A section of Kenyans have
been awaiting Atwoli’s reaction to the news of William Ruto being declared
President-elect.
Atwoli, who has been at the
helm of the labour body for 21 years is known to be a fierce critic of William
Ruto.
One of his pronouncements is
that Ruto would never become Kenya’s President.
