'I don't have to support DP Ruto or Raila,' MP Moses Kuria now says

Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Kuria now says that it is not mandatory for him to back any political aspirants eyeing the presidency at the August General Elections.

According to the legislator, who has been a vocal supporter of Deputy President William Ruto in the past, civilians are not legally or constitutionally required to back presidential aspirants.

As such, he says, it should come as no surprise if his Chama Cha Kazi party, which has decided to not field a presidential candidate, fails to back either Deputy President William Ruto or ODM leader Raila Odinga in the race to State House.

“It is not a constitutional requirement to support a presidential candidate,” Kuria said on Wednesday during a virtual interview on Citizen TV’s JKLive show.

While citing that DP Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja movement were formed when he was seeking medical attention abroad, Kuria underscored that it is imperative for politicians and Kenyans in general to understand the agenda of aspirants before deciding to support them.

“Personally, Kenya Kwanza was formed while I was in a hospital bed and so was Azimio, I will be crazy to say that I support things that were formed while I was ill. I just get anecdotes of what they stand for, I don’t understand them and I need time,” he said.

“By the time I was leaving Kenya I was in the Hustler movement but how it changed to Kenya Kwanza, I have not received a memo. The last time I was around, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula were in OKA, so am I supposed to sheepishly jump in without understanding what happened?”

In the event that his Chama cha Kazi party opts to back either DP Ruto or Odinga at the polls, Kuria says, the decision will only be made if the duo’s manifestos align with that of his political outfit and not because of blind faith.

“There is much more that should go into making such a decision and I think people should be fair to me and my party before asking us to support one side or the other cause we need time to understand them,” said the legislator.

Kuria, who is expected back in the country over the weekend, has been seeking medical attention in the United Arab Emirates for close to four months following a last year accident that left him immobile and nursing third degree burns.

The legislator was injured in September 2021 after an electric mat he was using to ease numbness in his feet malfunctioned, burning his limbs in the process.

After considering all options, including amputating his feet, Kuria’s medical team advised him to undergo an unprecedented stem cell surgery in Dubai’s American Hospital.

He has since undergone 10 surgeries to fix the damages sustained following the accident.

On February 12, 2022 the legislator walked independently for the first time in 137 days following the successful surgeries.
