'I never met with you!' Chebukati denies meeting Raila during election, threatens to sue

Former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has threatened to take legal action against Azimio La Umoja One Kenya party leader Raila Odinga over claims he made alleging that he (Chebukati) visited his home during last year’s General Election.

Speaking during a public rally at Jacaranda Grounds on Sunday, Odinga alleged that Chebukati and commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu had at one point visited him at his home while the electoral process was underway.

"Chebukati says that there are some people who wanted to bribe him together with his friends Guliye and Molu. I want to ask you... What did you come to do in my house?  What did you ask from me? And I have footage for that you play with me I will release it,'’ said Odinga.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Odinga, through Saroni & Stevens Advocates, Chebukati has termed the claims made by the opposition leader as “false and malicious”, further stating that he never met him “during the election year, let alone the election period.”

“Our Client reacted with shock and consternation at your allegation—which you know too well to be false and malicious. Our Client is aggrieved that the said allegation has the unconstitutional purpose and effect of lowering his dignity, and injuring his reputation among the right-minded persons in society,” reads the letter in part.

“In response to your allegations, our Client vehemently denies your allegation that he met you during the election year, let alone the election period, and in particular, at your house as alleged by yourself.”

The former IEBC boss is now demanding that Mr. Odinga furnishes him with the alleged video footage of the meeting he claimed happened at his home.

“In the circumstances of your allegations, and in the context of our Client's strong rebuttal thereto, our instructions are to demand from you, as of right, which we hereby do, to be furnished with the alleged video footage within seven days from the date hereof.

Kindly take notice that if we do not receive the video footage demanded hereinabove within the Demand Period, we shall be constrained to institute appropriate adverse but lawful proceedings against you,” adds the letter.
