I will not apologise to Passaris, Governor Sonko says after backlash

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has doubled down on his war of words with Nairobi Women Rep Esther Passaris that came to the fore on Saturday during the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Sonko, facing backlash after he berated Passaris during his speech telling her “Unanipigia simu mimi si bwana yako” which saw the MP walk off as he was speaking.

On Monday, Mr. Sonko insisted that he will not apologise adding that Ms. Passaris only wants to create enmity between him and women.

Anataka kunipiganisha na wamama na mimi nawapenda sana wamama,” said Sonko. “Mama mmoja asifanye diversionary tactics za kunikosanisha na wamama. Mimi niko na bibi na watoto wasichana.

While saying that he respects Passaris as she has a development agenda for Nairobi, the Governor said if he is to apologise, then she has to apologize to him first.

Akianza ku apoligise, hata mimi nta apologise,” (If she apologises first, then I will apologise,” he said.

Whatever differences the two leaders have played out publicly on Saturday after Passaris raised concerns over delayed approval of projects by the county government.

She said a “handshake” between the governor and Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua whom she insinuated have fallen out with Sonko. She also inquired why the governor never answers her calls.

On the counter, Sonko dismissed her claims saying he is in good terms with Njagua and demanded that Passaris stop calling her.

Mimi si bwana yako, ati niwe nashika simu wakati unataka, kwa hivyo hapo tuheshimiane,” said Governor Sonko. (I’m not your husband that I should be picking your calls the time you want.)

Leaders and social media users criticised Sonko over his remarks.

The Federation Of Women Lawyers FIDA called for the governor’s arrest for engaging in what they called hate speech.

Through their executive director Theresa Omondi, they asked the Inspector General of Police and Director of Criminal Investigations to take action describing his actions as “shameful and disrespectful.”
