The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revoked the nomination certificate of Umoja Summit Party Presidential candidate Walter Mong’are.

Mr. Mong’are was cleared to run for the country’s top seat on Thursday, June 2.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati on Monday, however, threw out Mong’are’s candidature over lack of a degree certificate.

This came after Safina Party presidential aspirant Jimi Wanjigi’s bid was earlier in the day dismissed over the same issue, following which Mr. Wanjigi faulted the electoral body for clearing Mr. Monga’re who reportedly had a transcript just like him.

“As the chief returning officer, upon discovering new information on Walter Mong’are as relates to lack of academic qualifications, I invited him to appear before me today at 2pm to clarify the issue. He failed to honour the invitation,” said Mr. Chebukati.

“Pursuant to regulation 42 (2c) of the Constitution, I hereby revoke the nomination certificate of Walter Mong’are of the Umoja Summit Party dated 2nd June 2022.”

This brings the total number of aspirants given a green light by the commission to run for presidency down to four; Azimio la Umoja One Kenya flag-bearer Raila Odinga, Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah and Agano Party’s David Mwaure.
