'If Mudavadi wanted a Cabinet position, Uhuru wouldve given him: Wamalwa on Kenya Kwanza deal
Devolution
Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has hit out at ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi
over his alleged Prime Cabinet Secretary slot if Kenya Kwanza wins the August
presidential elections, according to a leaked power-sharing agreement.
Wamalwa,
addressing the press at the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) press conference
on Friday, claimed that the allegedly proposed position was almost similar in duties
to the ones he currently plays in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet as
Devolution CS.
He
intimated that President Kenyatta would have been more than willing to absorb
Mudavadi into his Cabinet if only he (Mudavadi) had asked.
“We
were very surprised that the power-sharing agreement that was unveiled showed
Musalia being given a role of a Prime Cabinet Secretary in charge of inter-governmental
relations. Well, that is the position I’m currently holding by the way; as the
Minister for Devolution, I’m in charge of inter-governmental relations,” he
said.
“I
didn’t know my brother was aspiring to take over my roles. And I think if he
was looking for a Cabinet position, I have no doubt his good friend President
Uhuru Kenyatta would’ve said ‘Wamalwa, stay with Defence, release Devolution
and inter-governmental relations to our brother Musalia Mudavadi.’ I have no
doubt.”
The
CS, who also holds the Defence docket, slammed the larger Kenya Kwanza
coalition agreement terming it a feeble attempt to repurpose the Building
Bridges Initiative (BBI).
According
to Wamalwa, it is ironical for Deputy President William Ruto and his team to
oppose the President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga-led BBI, only to later go around
and adopt some of the document’s proposals in their own.
“The
problem our brothers and friends in Kenya Kwanza have is that, perhaps, they
don’t say what they mean, and they don’t mean what they say. Because if you’re
talking about opposing BBI because of the creation of positions, and they
themselves are creating the same positions, then really can we trust these
fellows?” He posed.
“Everything
they’re telling us, when given the opportunity, they might turn around and say
that’s not we meant.”
The Kenya Kwanza coalition agreement, drawn by
Tharaka Nithi Senator Prof. Kithure Kindiki, was deposited with the Registrar
of Political Parties on Sunday night.
The power deal, as revealed by Citizen TV, allocated
Mudavadi the Prime Cabinet Secretary slot if Ruto clinches the presidency in
the August State House race.
The
National Assembly Speaker’s seat is reserved for Bungoma Senator Moses
Wetangula and his Ford Kenya party, while the Senate speaker’s slot is
allocated to Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) led by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi.
