'If you're impeached it's across the country': DPP vows to block Sonko's Mombasa governor bid
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin
Haji has vowed to block former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's bid for the
Mombasa governorship seat in the upcoming August General Elections.
According to the DPP, following Sonko's
impeachment as Nairobi Governor, he remains "morally" barred from
holding public office.
As such, the DPP says his office will not
clear the controversial politician to contest for the Mombasa governor seat.
"In my opinion, if you are impeached,
you are not impeached not to run in Nairobi but it's across the country. So you
cannot continue jumping from one county to another with an impeachment on your
neck and then go start campaigning to become a governor of another
county," Haji said in an interview with Spice FM.
“We might lose but we will fight it. If you
are impeached, morally that individual should not be able to run for
office."
The former Nairobi Governor was last month
handed the Wiper Democratic Movement party ticket to contest for the Mombasa governor
seat.
The party also picked Kisauni Member of
Parliament Ali Mbogo to be Sonko's running mate in the race where he is set to
face ODM candidate and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.
Sonko was impeached in December 2020 on
allegations of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, misconduct
and crimes against National Law.
He is also facing several court cases
including several corruption cases, assault, and terror-linked offences.
