IG Koome hosts former CJ Maraga for talks on improving police welfare
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Monday hosted former Chief
Justice David Maraga at his office in Nairobi.
The
former CJ leads the National Task-force on Improvement of the Terms and
Conditions of Service and other Reforms for Members of the National Police Service
and Prison Service, recently appointed by President William Ruto.
The
two leaders agreed on the support and mutual cooperation expected from both
sides to facilitate the collection of views from the police officers
on the ground to improve their welfare.
Maraga
was accompanied by his deputy in the task-force, Carole Kariuki. Also present
were Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Edward
Mbugua and the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Noor Gabow.
Others
are the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, and the Principal
Assistant to the IG, Abdallah Komesha.
In a gazette notice dated
December 21, President Ruto noted that there is need to improve the working
conditions of police officers and the government is working to ensure they have
adequate resources to execute their mandate.
He
mandated the Maraga-led task-force with reviewing and recommending improvement
on the terms and conditions of service, identifying and recommending legal
policy institutional and operational reforms in NPS and KPS, and recommending
matters related to police welfare in all cadres of the police force.
"The imperative of strengthening the security sector remains a national priority and the primary means of surmounting the emerging and dynamic security challenges we face," the Head of State said at the time.
