Eight bars have been closed and 17 people arrested in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brew and bars operating outside the prescribed hours in Kuria West, Migori county.

Migori County police commander Francis Nguli said the closed bars were found operating outside the prescribed hours.

Nguli said the 17 people arrested include bar owners, workers and also the revelers who were found drunk and behaving disorderly during the crackdown. The suspects will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

The county police commander said they also managed to seize 16 crates and 6 cartons of unaccustomed alcohol from the neighboring country Tanzania during the crackdown.

Nguli said the crackdown is going on across the county, warning the people operating bars illegally and those selling uncustomed alcohol.

The county police boss also warned the bar operators against inciting members of the public against the police officers doing the crackdown.

He said the police will not hesitate to arrest them and also recommend that the licenses for their bars not be renewed.
