I’m not vying for Kiambu governor seat – Mugenda

Outgoing Kenyatta University (KU) Vice chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda has dispelled rumours that she intends to vie for the 2017 Kiambu gubernatorial seat held by business magnate William Gitau Kabogo.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Prof Mugenda admitted she was aware of the rumours but clarified that she had not thought of venturing into politics.

“I have never thought of joining politics and my profession has never been about politics. Ideally, the gubernatorial position ought to have been that of a C.E.O but it has turned out to be political and in such environments service delivery is a headache,” she said.

She explained that retiring from KU should not be seen as a move to try politics out.

“I want every Kenyan to rest assured that am not plunging in politics at all,” she emphasised.

Prof Mugenda said she was pleased by how much people appreciated her work at KU during her 10-year stay at the helm of the institution during which she oversaw the unveiling of new programs and an immense structural development.

She however said she was ready to serve the government and public in any other capacity that God will open for her, saying she had served her purpose at KU.

“I want to pave way for others to carry on with management of KU from where I will leave off,” said the VC. She said she would support whoever takes over from her.

She called on Kiambu leaders to shun politics of hatred and witch-hunting to move forward.
