The perpetrator of the heinous act is being held at a Busia police station, awaiting arraignment over the crime.
The infant was taking a nap in a room behind an establishment where her mother worked in Khuyala village, Matayos constituency, Busia County. A 23-year-old job seeker, pretending to seek rest in the same room as the baby, attacked her.
It was the infant’s screams that alerted the mother and friends to the gruesome event.
Their worst fears were confirmed when they rushed the infant to the hospital.
"This kid had developed what we call recto vaginal fistula, we have stool coming through the private parts of this girl, she cannot control stool. Some of these cases are so severe that we cannot restore, their lives have been destroyed severely," stated Janerose Ambuchi, in charge at Busia Referral Hospital.
The perpetrator presented as a female, perhaps lulling the mother into trusting her. It later emerged that the suspect possessed both male and female sexual organs.
Cases of defilement and gender based violence in Busia are rampant, with 621 cases involving children aged below 17 years reported since 2025.
Due to the severity of her injuries, the infant has been referred to the Eldoret Teaching and Referral Hospital for corrective surgery.
The suspect, aged 23, has been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court.
