IPOA to probe woman’s claims of self-defense in assault case

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority says it will investigate claims by a woman that she was beaten up for refusing sexual advances from a police officer.

IPOA said the move is to determine whether  Ms. Mary Wanjiru Ndung’u was victimised when she visited Central Police Station to file a separate complaint.

“Upon becoming aware of the incident, IPOA through its own motion and in execution of its mandate this (Wednesday) morning took up the matter to investigate and establish culpability,” the statement reads in part.

Police Constable Francis Maina is accused of assaulting the complainant on March 18. If he is found culpable, the Authority said it will ensure that he is prosecuted.

A report is expected to be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for further recommendations.
