Isaac Okero beats James Mwamu to claim LSK top seat

Isaac Okero has edged out James Aggrey Mwamu to clinch the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) presidency in February 25’s hotly contested elections.

Okero garnered 1581 votes to Mwamu’s 1378, with Allen Gichuhi coming in third with 1371 votes in the countrywide exercise.

Over 7000 lawyers were expected to cast their ballots at 33 polling stations in the one-day exercise that was supervised by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Tallying continued late into the night at the society’s Lavington office and Okero emerged the winner, besting Mwamu by only 209 votes.

Conceding defeat even as votes from the last polling stations were trickling in, Mwamu thanked those who supported him.

“I now concede that we lost this great battle. I want to thank all of those who supported me and campaigned for me. Yours was not in vain. I congratulate the winner and let the Law Society of Kenya move on,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.

Okero will now replace outgoing LSK chairman Eric Mutua.
