Kagwe directs county govts to advertise jobs for health workers

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has directed county governments to advertise vacancies for health workers who are on strike.

Mutahi urged over 8,000 unemployed nurses to apply for the vacancies once counties advertise the positions.

“Wale ambao wako nje ambao wanataka kazi na wanaaka uendelea na kazi wakati huu ndio sasa walete barua zao waajiriwe kazi na hiyo maneno iishie hapo. Lakini sana sana tungependa kuendelea na wale ambao tuko nao tussikizane vizuri tuendelee na kazi. Hiyo ndio ile Krismasi ingekuwa mzuri. Hatutaki mtu kusema mwaka uliopita alikuwa na kazi and then next year you are a statistic for jobless people,” he said.

The CS was speaking on Saturday on the sidelines of the funeral of former Cabinet Minister Joseph Nyagah in Mbeere, Embu County.

According to him, hiring new health workers will ease the crisis that has rocked the health sector across the country following the strike.

He maintained that the courts had stopped the strike to allow room for negotiations insisting that the government has continually engaged union officials over the issues raised.

CS Kagwe noted that as amicable solutions to the issues are sought, health workers should have gone back to work particularly during the festive season..

He said that as the country heads towards Christmas and a new year, the health sector is a critical component since a lot of accidents do happen at this time.

“There is need for health facilities to be ready for any eventuality and this can not happen if the workers are not in their stations,” he said.

The CS further called on Kenyans to adhere to COVID-19 protocols and regulations to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

He averred that it takes concerted efforts to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 especially at the community level.
