Kakamega: 2 children dead, 11 hospitalised after eating Githeri
According to the family, 1 child died on spot while another was confirmed dead upon arrival to the hospital.
11 others were treated and are yet to be discharged from hospital.
According to Rainne Juma, a doctor at Webuye casualty unit, the children, who are aged between 1 and 10 years old, were admitted with stomach upsets, diarrhea, and vomiting.
He confirmed that all were out of danger and under medical care.
According to the family, the grandmother made githeri for breakfast and ate it with the children before going to church, and she instructed the children to go to the kitchen if they were hungry.
Detectives from Kakamega have already launched an investigation into the incident in order to determine what happened.
Meanwhile, Bungoma County MP Catherine Wambilianga says such incidents are becoming more common as a result of hunger across the country, urging the government to focus on areas other than Trukana and Baringo.
Wabilianga claims that families are eating uncertified foods and urges the government to distribute relief food evenly across the country.
The bodies of the two have been moved to the Webuye Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
