Kakamega ‘leaders’ to join anti-IEBC protests after meeting Raila

CORD Principal and ODM party leader Raila Odinga has called on the Kakamega County’s party officials to join in the protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Addressing the press after meeting coalition leaders from the county on Wednesday, Raila said that he had met with ODM officials from the county to discuss the way forward regarding the protests saying they have agreed to join in the protests on Monday.

“I have met members of ODM party from Kakamega and we have agreed that there will be some activities here next Monday in solidarity with the protests in Nairobi,” he said.

The CORD leader has reiterated that the anti-IEBC protests will go on despite facing opposition from police who have in all three occasion thwarted their attempts to storm IEBC offices located at Anniversary Towers.

Mr Odinga further said that he had visited the county on invitation from Luhya leaders who sought to discuss several weighty matters affecting the region.

He said that the leaders from Western had raised concerns on issues of cohesion and there exclusion from government appointments and the county’s development.

“In the meetings we have heard today, various key issues affecting the Western region were raised and discussed,” he said.

“The leaders are concerned with the lack of development projects in the region, exclusion from national issues, Luhya unity and CORD affairs.”

Raila noted that they had reached an amicable agreement with the elders that would ensure the region is wholly involved in CORD affairs.

Raila’s impromptu visit to Kakamega comes just days after Deputy President William Ruto was in the region.

Speaking at a function in Butere High School in Kisumu last weekend, Ruto called on Luhya community to support Jubilee government during the 2017 General Election.
