Kalonzo wants Waita to drop Machakos Governor bid for Wavinya

Former Transport Chief Administrative Secretary Wavinya Ndeti might be the sole candidate for the Machakos gubernatorial seat in the upcoming General Election.

Based on remarks by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday, there might be talks within the party to convince former State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita to shelve his ambitions and back Wavinya’s candidature.

Mimi nina furaha ya kuona team ya Wiper iko strong, muwaangalie vizuri. Hao wengi ni vijana wetu. Bwana Nzioka my friend, I will talk with him. Kwa sasa mnaona Wavinya ako sawa sawa,” Mr. Musyoka told supporters in Masinga, Machakos County.

He was speaking after hosting Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential flag-bearer Raila Odinga and other regional leaders at a service at Masinga Catholic Church.

Musyoka’s comments come just over a week after Waita denied dropping out of the Machakos race, rubbishing such claims as “baseless propaganda” being spewed by his opponents.

Azimio la Umoja Coalition Party secretary-general and Suna East MP Junet Mohammed ignited the talk on Mr Waita withdrawing from race on Thursday during a rally by referring to Ms. Ndeti as “the incoming Machakos governor.”

The former State House Chief of Staff has in the meantime been appointed by Mr. Odinga to head Azimio campaigns in Machakos County.

The Azimio outfit has stated that by the end of June, it will strive to have one candidate in areas where there are many aspirants.

Odinga’s running mate Martha Karua on Saturday said that having one candidate will assist the Alliance to have many elected leaders.

Ms. Karua told Murang’a residents that the coalition party will conduct open negotiations with all aspirants and agree to support whoever is popular.
