KANU sues Jubilee over party colours

The Kenya National African Union (KANU) now wants the yet to be launched Jubilee Party to stop using what it terms as its party colours. Through Secretary General, Nick Salat, the independence party has told the Political Parties Tribunal that Jubilee will confuse voters if it continues using the colours.

The Jubilee colors that have been used to brand vehicles, billboards and party fliers for the three-day merger celebrations include red, yellow and black.

Salat claims that these are the independence party’s exclusive colours recognized by the Registrar of Political Parties.

In its filing before the Political Parties Tribunal, Salat terms Jubilee’s choice of colors as illegal and in contravention of the Political Parties Act.

According to the act, a party is in contravention if its name or symbol: “So nearly resembles the name or symbol, or an abbreviation of the name of another political party registered under this act or any other legal entity registered under any other written law.”

The matter could not, however, be heard Thursday as the Political Parties Tribunal chairman was unavailable. The matter will be heard on Friday, September 16.

KANU which is chaired by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has been opposed to the dissolution of several parties to merge and form the Jubilee Party.
