Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has defended Azimio’s tax boycott proposal of telling Kenyans to walk to work and if possible carpool.

According to Karua, she has been embracing carpooling as a measure to cut on costs and also as a means to avoid taxation.

“Long before the taxation issue came I always carpool, in fact there are meetings we have appeared in one car with Eugene, at times with other people. Carpooling is not a new thing to us, even to do things that we do…we need to cut on costs of how we operate, we not telling people things we have not done,” she said Monday on Spice FM.

Karua said such measures make government get lesser funds through taxation.

“Making them get less money because they have refused to listen to Kenyans, they are making life more difficult, they ought to be denied what they are seeking,” she said.

The tax boycott move was proposed by Azimio leader Raila Odinga as a measure to prevent the government from collecting more taxes due to the increased VAT on fuel from 8 to 16 percent.

Raila proposed that people should embrace walking and carpooling in protest against increased tax on fuel.

"Let us deny Ruto the fuel tax by limiting consumption of petrol and diesel. One way to do this is to carpool. Let us arrange to make regular journeys in a single vehicle whenever possible; give each other a ride, cut down on non-essential travel and walk instead of driving whenever possible," he said on Kamkunji grounds.

In accordance with his declaration, Raila boarded a matatu to work on Monday, saying he was embracing the convenience and camaraderie of public transport.
