KCAA cautions against use of unlicensed drones for political campaigns
The
Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has called for sobriety in the use of the
Kenyan airspace ahead of the political season in the country.
Speaking
in Kisumu on Friday, KCAA Director General Captain Gilbert Kibe decried increased
drone activity in the recent past, revealing that only 200 out of the over 1,000
drones currently operating in the country are licenced.
Kibe
pointed out that the drones have been used for both private and commercial
activities, with a high number of operators unaware of the existing regulations
on licensing and the security risks concerned.
The
DG further revealed that the authority has scheduled for retraining of pilots
and aircraft owners over the basic safety protocol considering the high number
of helicopters and choppers crisscrossing the country for political campaigns.
The
training comes 3 months shy of the Africities summit expected to kick off on May
17, 2022 in Kisumu.
Ten
Heads of State will be at the Lakeside city for the four-day summit that will
be looking at the role of intermediary cities of Africa in the African Union
Agenda of 2063.
