A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate from St. George's Secondary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, has died while receiving treatment for malaria.

According to a police report from Mariakani Police Station, the student, identified as Juma Mohamed, died on Thursday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Mariakani Sub-County Hospital, where he had been admitted after being diagnosed with malaria.

Reports indicate that the candidate, who hailed from Mombasa, initially sought medical attention at a private facility — Bombolulu Hospital in Kaloleni — after showing signs of illness before his condition worsened.

He was later rushed to Mariakani Sub-County Hospital, where he passed away while receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, Kaloleni Sub-County Police Commander Adan Ibrahim said the student’s body is lying at the same hospital and that his family has already collected it for burial in Mombasa in accordance with Islamic rites.

The tragic death comes as thousands of candidates across the country continue sitting for their national examinations, which started on Monday this week.
