KDF officer arrested over attempt to detonate smoke grenade at ex-wifes home

A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer has been arrested over a failed attempt to detonate a smoke grenade at his ex-wife’s home in Marachi Central, Busia County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), KDF Sergeant Denis Ochieng committed the act following a heated argument over child custody.

Sergeant Ochieng, who is based at a Mandera paraunit, was reportedly asked to wait for his ex-wife’s parents to arrive for the discussions to commence when he got agitated and took the grenade from his military jacket and threw it on the compound before taking off.

“On realizing that it did not explode, the man of the boots ran back and collected it, disposing it into a nearby river,” said the DCI.

Thunderstruck neighbours who witnessed the incident informed detectives who responded and effected his arrest.

The arrest was also reported to the KDF military police who are reportedly on the scene carrying out a search for the grenade alongside the DCI detectives based in Butula.
