KDF soldier among 3 arrested conducting illegal arrests in Nairobi

Three law enforcement officers have been detained after they were busted conducting illegal arrests in the Central Business District.

They are Police Corporal Cliff Ombati (stationed at Uhuru Camp ), KDF Lance Corporal Ben Shiundu ( from the 15 Kenya Army in Mariakani) and Prison Warder Eugine Shivachi (based at Wajir GK Prison)

The trio had embarked on an arresting spree targeting boda boda riders; they arrested them on trumped-up charges and demanded bribes from them.

Their plan backfired when they stopped Cyrus Mwangi on City Hall Way and took his motorcycle.

According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, the three harassed the rider and demanded a bribe of Ksh. 4,000 to release the bike that they had impounded.

A curious bystander is said to have alerted two uniformed police officers  — Reagan Akiko and Shukri Abdi — who were on patrol.

The two confronted the trio, resulting in a violent brawl: it took the combined efforts of officers and members of the public to subdue the three.

The two officers who were on patrol were sustained serious injuries during the attack and are being treated at a health facility in Nairobi.

Two handcuffs were recovered during the arrest.

The KDF corporal has since been handed over to the military police.

His two colleagues — Eugine Shivachi and Cliff Ombati — who work for the Prisons Service and the Administration Police, are in custody awaiting arraignment in court.

They are to face charges of extortion by threat, impersonation, and possession of government property.
