KDF Spokesperson confirms Kiunga blast

Military Spokesman Joseph Owuoth has confirmed that a blast occurred Sunday morning after a military vehicle ran over IED at Kiunga, Lamu County.

Speaking to Citizen Digital in a phone interview, Owuoth said that there were no causalities in the 11:00am incident.

He said that officers from Baure Military Camp were on re-supply duty when the IED exploded –this being the latest in a series of attacks in that region this year.

Owuoth says a probe into the blast is underway, adding that KDF officers are combing the area looking for the perpetrators.

Kenya has seen an increase in terror attacks in the North Eastern and Coastal region, with the latest being the killing of humanitarian workers along the Kulan-Liboi road in Garissa County on Tuesday, 6 June, 2017.

Confirming the incident, Daadab Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner, Harun Kamau, said that the deceased were travelling to Dhoble when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Last Tuesday’s incident brought to 29 the tally of people who have been killed in the border over the past four weeks.

This comes even as the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaisery, appeared before the Parliamentary National Security Committee earlier this month.

Tiatty MP Asman Kamama-led committee raised concerns over the credibility and standards of the security vehicles the government tendered recently, after an IED attack in the region left four police officers – who were aboard the APC vehicle – dead.

“Are these vehicles in the right condition? Are they the standard required because taxpayers’ money was used to purchase them and we saw how it was destroyed completely by an IED when it is supposed to protect security officers in such scenarios?” posed Ugunja MP, Opiyo Wandayi.

The CS, however, remained upbeat that the security vehicles are the right standard assuring the committee that the security department is doing everything possible to ensure that security is restored in the volatile region.
