The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has swiftly moved to renovate the neglected tunnel used by University of Nairobi students.

The move comes after Citizen Digital highlighted the difficulties the UoN students undergo to access classes and hostels while crossing the busy Uhuru Highway.

UoN students who spoke to Citizen Digital narrated how they risked their lives to cross the highway after the very important tunnel got flooded and neglected following the construction of the Expressway.

This led to damage of drainage system around the area, with even slight rainfall leading to flooding of the tunnel.

Since the tunnel has been flooded and neglected, the students are forced to dodge vehicle on Uhuru Highway, or wait for minutes to cross, and especially when they are in groups as it is dangerous to cross as an individual.

A spot check by Citizen Digital found that KENHA has quickly moved to drain the water from the flooded tunnel, and is now constructing another tunnel to be used by the students.

Workers from KENHA spent the entire weekend draining the water in the tunnel, as others put together an alternative tunnel in the UoN field, which will then be placed somewhere along the busy highway.

Cleophas Owuor, one of the UoN students who had narrated how he struggles to cross the highway to access class, expressed optimism that the rehabilitated tunnel will go a long way in avoiding accidents to students.

"Finally we can see some work going on. We hope they will find a lasting solution so that students don't risk their lives crossing the busy highway," Owuor said.

The students said the tunnel had been neglected for over a year, putting their lives at risk.
