Kenya National Highways Authority KeNHA has urged trailer
transporters to observe the axle load promise by weeding out crafty
practices.
During a benchmarking exercise of Juja weighbridge facilities by a delegation from Rwanda, Assistant Manager of the Axle Load Unit Engineer Michael Ngala said trailers have a habit of raising axles to evade weighbridge checks.
“We also transcend to other public roads and that means that a lot more resources in needed to do weighbridge management in cubbing the incidents of overloading on other networks,’ he said.
“It is actually a huge price for the country to pay if the overloading issue is not addressed.”
Ngala however commended the truck SACCOs for ensuring compliance with axle load limits, as he noted a 98% compliance rate.
Francis Gihoza who is part of the Rwanda Transport Development Agency on his part said they had already identified other regions where weigh bridges would be erected and already two of them were under construction.
“A study was conducted in terms of weighbridge and it determined around eight locations that need weigh bridges so among the eight two are being implemented and we believe that in the next year, they will be operational,” he said.
