Kenya has sufficient funds to pay teachers better salaries- MP Nabwera

In a recent interview with Citizen TV's Daybreak show, where they discussed the cash crisis in schools, Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Nabii Nabwera stated that Kenya has ample financial resources to adequately compensate teachers.

MP Nabwera stated his belief that Kenya has sufficient financial resources to address the long-standing issue of teacher remuneration.

"I don't agree that we don't have money to pay teachers a better salary. That I don't agree" Said Nabwera.

The legislator emphasized that the government has invested significantly in infrastructure and other development projects, necessitating a strategic reallocation of resources.

While tangible development is essential, he contended that prioritizing investments in education would have far-reaching benefits.

"We have a problem as a country. A social, cultural and communal problem. Even when you look at the current budget, we will put a-lot of money in building and construction. Lofty things." Nabwera said.

He argued, however, that the country's focus should shift from hardware to software, emphasizing the need to combat corruption as a means of improving teachers' salaries and working conditions.

Nabwera stated unequivocally that combating corruption is a prerequisite for improving teachers' salaries and working conditions.

He contended that if corruption could be effectively reduced, the funds saved could be channeled into the education sector to improve teacher welfare.

During the interview, the Lugari MP called for a shift in working conditions for teachers stating that better working conditions and better facilities. Nabwera asserted that a well-compensated and motivated teaching workforce is crucial for the successful implementation of educational reforms.

"I would pay someone six thousand but if I make the working environment conducive that person is happier than a person earning two hundred thousand in a horrible working environment." Said Nabwera.

The MP stated that instead of using a chalk board, you use a white board, and instead of teaching 100 students in a class, he teaches 45 so that the teacher feels appreciated.

The remarks by the Lugari MP come at a time when teachers' unions are advocating for better pay and working conditions.
