In a statement on Wednesday, expressed confidence that Kenyan troops would be successful in disarming the hundreds of gangs that have for decades waged terror in Haiti and even seized control of the country.
The Senator went Biblical, stating that Kenya would turn Haiti into a prosperous nation "flowing with milk and honey", a scriptural analogy used to describe the victory by the Israelites and the recapture of Canaan.
“The U.N Security Council approval for Kenya to lead restoration of peace & security to Haiti is signature of our country role in global community,” said Cherargei, as he pointed out that the Kenyan security officers being deployed to Haiti would be drawn from the highly-skilled special units.
“Our Police deployment to Haiti is NOT ordinary police but Special Forces / Paramilitary Police to handle the Haitian criminal gangs. In the next one year, Haiti shall be a country of prosperity flowing with honey and milk courtesy of Kenya's peace process,” stated the Nandi Senator.
The remarks by Cherargei follow similar pronouncements by President William Ruto’s alies who have since backed the move by the government despite public criticisms.
National Assembly Defence and Foreign Relations Committee Chairperson Nelson Koech disclosed that officers who will be deployed for the Haiti mission would be drawn from the special police units including the Recce Squad and Rapid Deployment Unit.
On Tuesday, United States President Joe Biden while on a phone call to President Ruto thanked him for "answering Haiti’s call" to have Kenya serve as the lead nation of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.
On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved a yearlong multinational security mission for Haiti, led by Kenya. A dozen other countries including Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda have said they would join the mission.
Kenya has pledged to deploy 1,000 security personnel for the mission seeking to combat a decades-long gang violence characterized by widespread murders, kidnappings and extortion.
