The Kenya Red
Cross Society (KRCS) Secretary General Dr. Asha Mohammed has stepped down from
the role with immediate effect for personal reasons.
The announcement
was made by the society’s Board Chairman Geoffrey Korir, who said that Deputy
Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idris will now take over the role in an acting
capacity.
Mr. Korir, in a
statement to newsrooms in Friday, noted that Dr. Asha will – over the next few
months – be involved in a transition process as she oversees a smooth handover
to Dr. Ahmed.
“The Board is
confident that Dr. Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process
with the support of the Board, Staff, Volunteers and Partners of the Kenya Red
Cross,” he stated.
“Dr. Asha has been
the Secretary General since January 2020 and prior to that held the positions
of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the
Kenya Red Cross.”
Mr. Korir further
added: “Her role as Secretary General coincided with a very difficult global
and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, to
the worst drought the country has experienced in the last several decades.”
He went on to
convey the board’s appreciation of the outgoing Secretary General’s service,
passion and commitment to the society, saying the Kenya Red Cross fully lived
upto its promise of responding to emergencies and supporting communities during
her tenure.
“Dr. Asha has been
an inspiration to the community of Staff, Volunteers, Partners and Members of
the Kenya Red Cross Society, who look forward to her support in the future as a
community leader and life member of the Kenya Red Cross,” added Mr. Korir.
