Kenya unveils initiative to address battery e-Waste crisis

Kenya, in partnership with the International Electrotechnical Commission Global Impact Fund (IEC-GIF), has embarked on an initiative to tackle the escalating challenge of battery e-waste.

Unveiled on Tuesday in Nairobi, this initiative signifies a significant stride towards addressing one of the most pressing environmental issues.

Backed by an investment of approximately Ksh.58 million, the initiative aims to convert battery e-waste into valuable e-resources, fostering economic growth and sustainability. This endeavor, which is slated to span over the next two years, places a strong emphasis on promoting SME-led environmental innovation.

During the launch event, Matthew Doherty, Senior Advisor and Officer of the IEC-GIF, highlighted the importance of local collaboration in addressing environmental challenges.

Doherty's meetings with key stakeholders, including the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission, underscored the critical role of partnership in ensuring the success of the initiative.

Doherty's discussions with KEBS focused on strengthening ties with Differ Community Power, the Implementing Partner in Kenya. These deliberations underscored KEBS' vital contribution to the project's success and emphasized the collaborative efforts needed to drive sustainable change.

By harnessing the power of collaboration and innovation, Kenya aims to set a precedent for responsible e-waste management and contribute to a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.
