The Kenyan government
has welcomed plans by Los Angeles-based production company Invention Studios to
expand its investments in the country’s creative sector.
The announcement was made following a meeting on Wednesday between Cabinet Secretary for
Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports
Salim Mvurya, and Invention Studios President, Nicholas Weinstock, ahead
of the International Creative Economy Conference in Nairobi.
According
to the CS, to date, the partnership between Invention Studios and the
Ministry has resulted in the production of five films in Kenya, an indication of growing international
interest in the country’s creative potential.
CS Mvurya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the sector, noting that ongoing policy
reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and fiscal incentives aim to raise the
creative economy’s contribution to GDP from the current 5% to 10% by the end of
2025.
“This collaboration shows that the creative
industry can be a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and youth
empowerment,” said Mvurya, adding that the government is working to establish a
more supportive environment for local creatives and international
collaborators.
Mr. Weinstock highlighted Kenya’s storytelling
talent and emphasized the importance of mentorship, training, and international
exposure. He said Invention Studios is committed to sourcing and developing high-quality
Kenyan projects for global film and television markets.
CS Mvurya noted that as part of its broader strategy to grow the
sector, the government is constructing modern film studios under the Affordable
Housing Programme to serve as production locations. Other initiatives include
subsidized production costs, tax and levy exemptions, and improved visa
facilitation for creative industry investors.
The International Creative Economy Conference,
set for June 5 in Nairobi, will bring together investors, creatives,
policymakers, and development partners—including a U.S. delegation—to explore
strategies for expanding investment, fostering collaboration, and promoting
innovation in the sector.
