The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists
Union (KMPDU) has joined the nation in mourning the death of former Prime
Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “titan of our liberation
struggle” and “a fearless defender of democracy.”
In a statement signed by
Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, the union paid glowing tribute to the late
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, recalling his longstanding
support for the rights and welfare of healthcare workers.
“Kenya has lost a monumental
figure, a titan of our liberation struggle, a fearless defender of democracy,
and a statesman whose vision and courage shaped the course of our nation’s
history,” said Dr. Atellah.
He noted that beyond his national
leadership, Raila stood with the country’s medical fraternity during their
fight for better working conditions and fair labour practices.
“Rt. Hon. Odinga also stood
firmly with KMPDU, both in public and behind closed doors during our struggles
for fair labour practices and the dignity of healthcare workers. His solidarity
with doctors reflected his lifelong belief in social justice and his deep
compassion for the welfare of all Kenyans,” Dr. Atellah added.
The union said Odinga’s passing
marks the end of an extraordinary era, lauding his courage and resilience in
pushing for a democratic and equitable Kenya.
“His passing marks the end of an
extraordinary era, one defined by courage, conviction, and the relentless
pursuit of a more just and democratic Kenya,” the statement read in part.
Dr. Atellah extended condolences
to the Odinga family and the ODM fraternity, praying for strength and comfort
during the period of national mourning.
“On behalf of the medical
fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Mama Ida
Odinga, the entire Odinga family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and all
Kenyans mourning this immeasurable loss,” he said.
“May the Almighty grant comfort and strength to his family and
the nation during this time of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
