Kenyan men have an average of 7 sexual partners - report

The average number of sexual partners among Kenyan men is 7.4, a new report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows.

In the report dubbed the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022, KNBS found out that among Kenyan women meanwhile, the average number of sexual partners is 2.3.

“Of those with more than one partner in the last 12 months, 24% of women and 45% of men reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse,” the report said.

The sample for the 2022 KDHS was drawn from the Kenya Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF), which is the frame that KNBS currently operates to conduct household-based sample surveys in Kenya.

Data collection for the survey was carried out from February 17 to July 13, 2022.

In the 12 months before the survey, 19 per cent of women had sex with a person who neither was their husband nor lived with them.

However, only 37 per cent of these women reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse with such a partner.

“Thirty-five per cent of men reported having sex in the last 12 months with a person who neither was their wife nor lived with them, and 68% of these men reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse with such a partner,” the report added.

On contraceptive use, researchers found out that 63 per cent of currently married women are using a contraceptive. Fifty-seven per cent of these were found to be using modern methods such as sterilisation, injectables, intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive pills, implants, condoms, emergency contraception, the standard days method, and the lactational amenorrhea method.

“Among currently married women, the most commonly used methods are injectables (20%), implants (19%), and contraceptive pills (8%). Among sexually active unmarried women, male condoms are the most commonly used contraceptive method (20%), followed by injectables (16%) and implants (11%),” the report said.
