Kenya's SQUARE Pharmaceuticals begins exporting locally made medicines to Somalia

Kenya’s pharmaceutical manufacturers, SQUARE Pharmaceuticals has achieved a historic milestone with its first export from the Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZ) plant.
The shipment, destined for Somalia, marked the company’s first-ever export of locally produced medicines.
“This milestone not only signifies our dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare solutions globally but also marks Kenya’s growing role in the international pharmaceutical market. We are proud to be exporting our first batch of medicines to Somalia, showcasing the region’s capacity to meet global health demands.” Said Dr. Iruki M. Kailemia, Director of SQUARE Pharmaceuticals Kenya EPZ Ltd,
The shipment included 5,500 boxes of Angilock 50/12.5 Tablets, a combination of Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, used to treat high blood pressure, with export positioning Kenya as a vital hub for pharmaceutical exports across Africa.

Since its Athi River plant became operational in 2023, SQUARE has employed 250 local workers, with plans to expand its workforce to 1,000 as production scales up. The company also has future plans for producing liquid and injectable medicines in Kenya, further boosting the local economy.
Government agencies such as the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) played a critical role in facilitating this export, showcasing the collaborative effort driving Kenya’s pharmaceutical sector onto the global stage.
