The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has cautioned Kenyans against the spread of intimate materials on social media.

Acting KFCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Christopher Wambua says it is illegal to share intimate images or videos of other parties without their consent.

Mr. Wambua, speaking during a press address on Wednesday, warned that offenders risk a two-year jail term, a fine of up to Ksh.200,000 or both.

“It is illegal to share intimate images or videos of third parties without their consent. We also urge social media operators, online distributors and exhibitors to enforce their community guidelines strictly to avoid misuse of their platforms,” he said.

The board also expressed concerns over an increase in the streaming of live video sessions of explicit adult shows in blatant breach of the laws of the land.

The KFCB boss said it is monitoring the said activities with a view to collecting evidence for transmission to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for prosecution.

“Moderation of content in various respective platforms must be in alignment with our laws and cultural values,” Mr. Wambua added.

“Going forward, it is important to note that the board shall continue to monitor and flag offensive and disturbing audio-visual content and report the same top relevant government agencies and platform operators for appropriate action.”

The board further appealed to parents, caregivers and guardians to pay attention and to keenly monitor the content children under their care access on social media networks, broadcast channels and other platforms.

In cases where children have access to the internet and smart devices, parents were urged to exercise responsibility to ensure minors do not access inappropriate content.

They were also encouraged to activate safety features available on various platforms and smart devices used by minors in order to protect children from the corruption of their morals.
