Kiambu family reveals why they chained, locked up kin for 25 years

A man in Kiambu has been in chains for over 25 years, his brother has revealed.

33-year-old Peter Ngugi from Wangige village in Kabete Sub-county is said to have been chained after he developed a mental disorder.

His elder brother George Ndungu revealed that the family had ran out of options after visiting hospitals in vain.

George narrated to Citizen Digital the difficulty they found in dealing with his brother’s condition because he needs special care and someone watching over him at every moment.

“It has been hard for us as the immediate family and our personal lives have been undermined,” he said.

He further narrated how at one point he faced the wrath of villagers who got him arrested claiming that the family was torturing the victim by chaining and locking him up.

According to their mother, Elizabeth Wanjiku, the family has endured a lot of financial challenges in ensuring that Ngugi gets basic needs.

“It is a great challenge for us to dress him and provide shelter especially with his current health condition that makes him destroy anything around him,” Mrs. Elizabeth said.

She raised concern over the lack of government institutions and health centers thath deal with such cases.

The family is calling for help from good samaritans to help their son lead a normal life.

“We wish to implore well-wishers to intervene so that they can help build a permanent structure for Ngugi where he cannot escape. That way, we can unchain him,” they said.
