Kioni-led Jubilee faction to sue Gov't over closure of bars
The
Jeremiah Kioni-led faction of the Jubilee Party will next week head to court to
sue the government over the move to shut down various bars across the country.
The
party faulted the government's move saying the closure of bars was done
without putting consideration into key vital concerns such as a compensation
roadmap to those whose businesses are being destroyed in the ongoing crackdown.
The
embattled party SG said the shut-down has resulted into a ripple effect
since many areas of the economy associated with the entertainment outlets have been
affected.
Kioni
also accused the national government of usurping the county governments’ mandate
since alcohol control is a devolved function.
He
said that, as a result of actions taken, many families are bound to feel a
harsh pinch of the economy since the bar business is intertwined with other
supportive ventures such as butcheries among others.
“When
you have paid for your licence and the money has been received and the licence
issued, and then the bars are closed the way they’re being closed, that amounts
to breach of contract,” he said in a Thursday press address.
“In
the coming days, there should be somebody coming to court on behalf of the bar
owners, and we’ll be suing the government for breach of contract. We will do that
very early next week...and we know they don’t like obeying court orders, but
that is what we must do.”
