A 40-year-old man who had been arrested for allegedly killing his wife in Kagio Town, Kirinyaga County has committed suicide at Kiamaciri Police Station in Mwea-West Sub-county.

Mwea West Sub-county Police Commander Rashid Ali said the suspect, John Mugendi, hanged himself in the cell using his t-shirt, according to a report by officers who were on duty.

The police boss said Mugendi was arrested on November 17, 2024, after stabbing his wife Catherine Wanjiku to death.

"After he was arrested he was held here at Kiamaciri Police Station after which he was presented to Baricho Law Courts where police were allowed to hold him until December 9, 2024, to allow for investigations," said the police boss.

The suspect committed suicide as his late wife aged 40 years was being buried at Kiaragana village in Ndhia Constituency on Tuesday.

Kirinyaga County Executive Committee  (CEC) Member for Gender and Youth Millicent Nyawira said Governor Waiguru's administration has rolled out a mental health programme in all medical facilities to address rising cases of mental health.

"This mental health programme involves deploying counsellors in all medical facilities," said the CEC.
