Police officers in Kirinyaga County have
impounded a lorry ferrying alcohol with suspected counterfeit stamps at Kagio.
The truck, which was reportedly headed to Nairobi
from Embu, was towed to Kagio Police Station with the alcohol bottles packed in
cartons.
The police then called officers from the Kenya
Revenue Authority (KRA) based in Nyeri, who spent the better part of Friday
evening probing the contents of the lorry.
Kirinyaga Police Commander Mathew Mang’ira
confirmed the incident noting that the contents of the lorry were later transported
to Nyeri and subjected to further verification in order to ascertain the
authenticity of the stamps and the safety of the content.
The lorry was said to have been ferrying
about 1,000 cartons, each containing 20 bottles of alcohol labeled ‘Power.’
This comes in the wake of a stern warning by
the government to companies and individuals devising schemes to evade taxes.
President William Ruto in mid-October said
his administration would launch a crack-down in pursuit of tax-evaders in bid
to rejuvenate the country’s ailing economy which has lost a considerable
part of its revenue to tax cheats.
