Leaders in Kirinyaga County have cautioned farmers against selling green tea leaves to individual business persons.

Gichugu Member of Parliament Gicimu Githinji and his Kirinyaga Central counterpart Gachoki Gitari said tea brokers will not be allowed to buy the green tea leaves in Kirinyaga.

They called on the County security team to take action against them.

The legislators told tea farmers that if they continue selling their produce to private millers, it will lead to the collapse of local factories.

Directors of Zone 5, who accompanied the two MPs said the brokers are buying a kilo of green tea at Ksh.21, depending on the quality.

Gicimu and Gitari cautioned investors against purchasing tea leaves from farmers at low prices, assuring the farmers that parliament is working to ensure the interest of tea farmers are protected.

"Tea farmers in Kirinyaga should not sell their green tea leaves to brokers as government is determined to deal with the tea and coffee cartels ruthlessly.”
