Kisumu on high alert over suspected coronavirus infections from Siaya

Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o says the county is on high alert after it emerged that two suspected COVID-19 cases from Siaya County came into contact with “a lot of people” in Kisumu.

According to Prof. Nyong’o there is an alarming increase of people being quarantined in the county’s isolation facilities.

“It has come to our attention and knowledge that two suspected COVID-19 cases from Siaya County have had interactions with a lot of people in Kisumu over the past few days.

This situation  has heightened the number of people being quarantined in our isolation  facilities as the possible contacts are traced. Our health system is increasingly overstretched by this increased demand,” said the Governor in a statement.

Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday, the governor announced that the county headquarters at Prosperity House and City Hall will remain closed to the public to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

He further announced the suspension of provision of non-essential services by the county government, adding that only departments including Health and Sanitation, Finance, Water, Veterinary, Disaster and Emergency Services will remain open.
