Doctors
in Embu County have received their long-overdue promotions after years of
waiting and advocacy, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists
Union (KMPDU) announced on Tuesday.
According to KMPDU Secretary General Dr.
Davji Atellah, a total of 19 consultants have now been promoted, ending a
period of stagnation that saw doctors in the county watching as their
counterparts in other counties advanced in their careers.
“In 2021, Embu doctors watched as
promotions were announced in other counties while they remained stagnant.
However, through consistent follow ups, strategic media engagement, and years
of agitation including two industrial actions, the most recent in December
2025, we have seen results,” said Dr. Atellah.
He said
that over 80 percent of doctors in Embu have now been promoted across three
successive batches.
In
addition, he stated, all contracts have been converted to Permanent and
Pensionable status, with plans underway to employ more doctors.
Dr. Atellah praised the solidarity of Embu
KMPDU members, attributing the success to their united stance.
He also
singled out the branch leadership under National Deputy Secretary General Dr. Dennis
Miskellah, who was previously terminated during strike in 2024 but has since been reinstated,
promoted to his rightful job group, and is awaiting arrears.
“Your uncompromising stand on the issues
affecting our members is a testament to what we can achieve as a community of
workers when we remain focused and united,” Dr. Atellah said.
The union reiterated its commitment to
ensuring that no doctor is left behind, emphasizing that collective action and
unity remain central to achieving further milestones in the healthcare sector.
