The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and
Dentists Union (KMPDU) has lauded the government after the country’s healthcare
sector reached what it termed as a historic milestone with the official posting
of over 6,000 healthcare interns nationwide.
KMPDU termed the posting, which included more than 2,000
doctor interns, as a “tremendous leap forward” for public healthcare.
In a statement issued on Monday, KMPDU Secretary General Dr.
Davji Atellah described the posting as a landmark achievement that will be
remembered for generations to come.
“This is a victory for all of us, for patients who deserve
timely, quality care, for over 2,000 doctor interns who have trained with
dedication, and for KMPDU, as we have stood firm in the fight for fairness and
dignity,” said Dr. Atellah.
The union has in recent months led nationwide protests
demanding the immediate posting and fair remuneration of interns as outlined in
the previous Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). According to the union, the
deployment affirms that their efforts were not in vain.
“We have raised our voices, marched in the streets, and stood
in solidarity to demand the posting of interns and fair remuneration as per the
Collective Bargaining Agreement. Today’s achievement shows that our collective
struggle was not in vain,” he added.
Dr. Atellah also commended Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale
for keeping his word and honouring the terms of the April agreement, describing
him as a leader whose example should be emulated.
“We take this moment to commend Aden Duale, a leader who has
kept his word and honoured the agreements of 10th April 2025. His commitment to
improving Kenyan healthcare has set an example for others to follow. His
forthright attitude towards a motivated workforce will ensure industrial
harmony in the sector, hence the much-needed UHC,” said Atellah.
He further extended appreciation to President William Ruto for
his role in unlocking the internship stalemate through what he termed as
“decisive leadership.”
“Our sincere appreciation also goes to the President, William
Samoei Ruto whose decisive leadership in creating these positions has made this
milestone possible,” said Atellah.
As the union celebrates the deployment, it called for continued
unity and purpose to drive the country towards a more inclusive and robust
healthcare system.
“Let this be a reminder that when we unite with purpose, no
obstacle is insurmountable. Together, we will continue to build a stronger,
more equitable healthcare system for every Kenyan,” stated the doctors’ union
boss.
