The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has called for an immediate probe into the manner in which police officers and protesters conducted themselves during the nationwide protests on Monday which turned chaotic.

In a statement on Monday, the KNCHR chairperson Roseline Odede condemned the demonstrations which they established have resulted in "arrests, destruction of property, injuries and allegations of use of live bullets by the security agents."

Ms. Odede noted that they, in liaison with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), are working to verify the allegations and will bring the perpetrators to book if found guilty.

"If proven, it would be very unfortunate and the same can be prosecuted under the command responsibility principle," said part of the statement.

She also called on the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to similarly look into the matter, and ensure police conduct during demonstrations is streamlined and adhered to.

"KNCHR reiterates the need for the Kenya Police Service officers to adhere to the checklist on public order management during protests and assemblies," said Ms. Odede.

"The standards are very clear and must therefore be followed to the spirit and letter as enshrined in the Kenya Constitution and Police Service Standing Orders.

In the same breath, the commission says those involved in the looting or any form of misconduct should be apprehended and arraigned.

"The Commission will continue to monitor and document the ongoing situation and reiterates to Kenyans that; rights must be exercised within the confines of the law and in a manner that respects the rights of others including; protection of right to property by private and public entities and right to freedom and security of the person."
