KNEC launches digital platform to verify academic certificates

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has unveiled a new digital platform aimed at streamlining the verification of academic certificates.
Speaking during
the launch at Mitihani House, Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius
Bitok said the app-based platform—currently being piloted in collaboration with
the Public Service Commission—will accelerate the authentication process for
certificates and qualifications.
“With this
platform, we are saying goodbye to the era of forged certificates. Verification
is now fast, secure, and accessible,” said Dr. Bitok.
The initiative
comes amid an ongoing crackdown by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission
(EACC) on fake academic papers within the public sector. Several suspects have
already been apprehended, with a number of cases currently before the courts.
In addition
to the verification platform, the Ministry of Education is also ramping up
support for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Dr. Bitok revealed that the
Ministry has developed a suite of online resources and interactive platforms
designed to guide teachers and parents through CBC implementation.
“We have
digital programs already in place that teachers and parents can access online
to learn more about CBC pathways. I urge all stakeholders—including learners—to
make use of these resources immediately,” he said.
During the
event, the PS also presided over the launch of the Education Assessment
Resource Centre (EARC), a facility set to strengthen Kenya’s capacity in
educational assessment, psychometrics, and competency-based evaluation.
Funded by the
Kenyan government in partnership with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth &
Development Office (FCDO) and other partners, the Centre is expected to drive
standardization and best practices in test development and marking. It will
also offer professional development opportunities for educators and examiners.
“The Centre
is a game changer. It will equip teachers, examiners, and researchers with
skills in psychometrics, data analysis, and assessment techniques. It aligns
perfectly with our vision for quality and inclusive education,” Dr. Bitok said.
KNEC CEO Dr.
David Njengere emphasized that the EARC will play a critical role in promoting
quality, equity, and inclusion within Kenya’s education system.
“This Centre
will professionalize the assessment landscape in Kenya. It will ensure fairness
and credibility in how we measure learning outcomes,” he said, adding that the
first cohort of teachers and education professionals has already commenced
training at the Centre.
