The
Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has successfully carried out Kenya’s first
balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty on a premature newborn, marking a historical
moment in the health sector.
The
procedure involves inserting a small tube through a blood vessel and guiding it
to a narrowed pulmonary valve in the heart to allow blood to flow freely to the
lungs.
The
case, according to a statement released by the hospital's management on Tuesday,
involved a premature baby born at 34 weeks on January 2, 2026, in Kajiado
County.
The
infant, part of a twin birth, was diagnosed with a critical heart condition
known as pulmonary valve stenosis, which restricts blood flow from the heart to
the lungs.
Shortly
after birth, the baby developed breathing difficulties and required oxygen
support. Further tests confirmed that the heart valve was severely narrowed,
placing the baby at risk.
Doctors
at the hospital recommended urgent intervention, prompting the procedure to be
performed on February 5, 2026, by a team of paediatric heart specialists and
anaesthesia experts.
Following
the surgery, the baby showed significant improvement. By February 10, the
infant was breathing normally, feeding well, and steadily gaining strength
under close medical supervision.
“I am
grateful to God and to the doctors and nurses who never gave up on my baby,”
Josephine Pilanoi, the child’s mother, stated.
Acting KNH
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Richard Lesiyampe said the success highlights the
hospital’s efforts to improve specialized care for newborns.
“This
procedure reflects our commitment to strengthening advanced medical services
and improving survival outcomes for critically ill newborns,” he noted.
Dr.
Lesiyampe added that the hospital will continue investing in technology, staff
training, and teamwork to ensure patients can access world-class care locally.
