KSPCA opens new branch in Watamu to boost rabies control

According to KSPCA, the new branch will strengthen efforts to control rabies and improve animal welfare in collaboration with the Kilifi County Government.

Watamu’s growing population has led to an increase in stray and abandoned animals, creating demand for local intervention.

KSPCA Executive Officer Emma Ngugi said the new branch is part of the organisation’s wider plan to expand access to animal welfare services across the country.

“With Watamu’s growing population, it is vital to ensure animals — both stray and domesticated — can lead healthier lives,” she said.

Rabies remains a major public health concern in Kenya, with up to 2,000 human deaths reported annually, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Vaccination of pets and stray animals is key to prevention, but access remains limited in many areas.

The Watamu branch plans to continue holding medical camps in 2026, including spay-and-neuter programmes to manage animal populations alongside routine vaccination drives.

Tania Harris, Chairperson of KSPCA Watamu, said the initiative will also engage the community in responsible pet ownership.

“We plan to hold regular medical camps for both pets and stray animals. Improving animal welfare not only benefits the animals but can also enhance the community’s image and attract visitors,” she said.

KSPCA Watamu joins the organisation’s existing network of branches in Nairobi, Mombasa, Naivasha, and Nanyuki.
