KUPPET hits out at Magoha over 'unpredictability' of school reopening dates
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education
Teachers (KUPPET) has questioned whether the Ministry of Education intends to
follow through with a fresh directive for schools to resume operations next
week amidst the possible announcement of the presidential election results.
This comes after Education Cabinet Secretary
George Magoha on Saturday further pushed the reopening of schools from the
earlier announced Monday to Thursday, August 18, 2022.
The changes, according to Magoha, had been
informed by a delay in the vote tallying process.
According to KUPPET, teachers, pupils,
parents and stakeholders alike are unsure on whether the ministry will carry on
with its order since the reopening date has shifted in barely a week's time and
could further change should the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission
(IEBC) experience further delays in announcing the results.
On July 31, Magoha had said that schools
would reopen on August 15, but later changed the date to August 11 after
ordering an immediate closure of schools in a statement on August 1.
"The decision was universally condemned
by all education stakeholders, none of which was consulted in its making,"
said KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori in a statement to newsrooms.
"Given the unpredictability of the changes,
there is uncertainty whether the Minister will adhere to the new date, since
the election programme is still unfolding."
According to KUPPET, the uncertainty
surrounding the reopening of schools is making it difficult for schools to make
plans based on the latest announcement.
"This is a sad state of affairs, given
the immense financial and logistical factors involved in the re-opening of
schools. To remedy the situation, the Minister must issue a statement on the
comprehensive term dates for schools for the rest of the year," said
KUPPET.
