Eight people are hospitalized in the Samburu area of Kwale county after being beaten by General Service Unit (GSU) officers on Wednesday.

Those injured were among a group of villagers who barricaded a road near Kazamoyo in protest of a private developer who allegedly took their 15-acre land.

The protest drew the attention of GSU officers, who stormed the area and began beating the protesters.

The villagers condemned the officer's actions, calling them "police brutality inflicted on people seeking justice for their land."

“Today the GSU officers came and flogged us here and the government always tell us to maintain calm yet our rights are being violated,” one villager said.

“We are astonished by the manner the police flogged us in our homes, and if this government is really concerned about our welfare, let it solve this menace once and for all, it has been a long time living with this problem,” another villager added.

The Samburu police department also condemned the incident, revealing that two GSU officers were also injured.
