Kwale police probing two teachers in corporal punishment case

In yet another case of extreme corporal punishment in schools, police in Kwale County are investigating an incidence where a standard six pupil was allegedly assaulted by two teachers.

The Mwakigwena Primary School pupil, who is epileptic, is currently nursing wounds on her hands and back from what she claims resulted from failure to complete homework on time.

“The teachers started canning me on the hands and head, they also insulted me saying am walking like a cow,” narrated the standard six pupil.

She further claimed that the teachers also told her to go home and not to report back to school.

“They said I am old enough to get married and bear kids and bring them to school.”

While corporal punishment remains outlawed in this country, the school head teacher, a Ms Mwanarusi, said that she was not privy to such occurrence in the school.

“I am not aware, nobody has come to report to me any case,” said Ms Mwanarusi.

Msambweni OCPD, Joseph Chebusit, confirmed that the incident was reported at Diani Police Station under OB Number 41/02/03/2017.

Despite its official ban, corporal punishment has remained endemic in Kenya with many learners soaking the pain in silence.

Education experts are of the opinion that the vice has stubbornly survived because the ban was not followed by the ideal training of teachers in alternative disciplining methods.
